Growing up in Grand Forks, North Dakota, Sadie Hanson always knew she wanted to make an impact in her community. Her decision to attend the University of North Dakota (UND) wasn’t just about staying close to home—it was about being part of a university that would offer her the opportunities and environment to grow as a leader. Now a graduate with both a BBA in Marketing and a BS in Public Affairs, as well as a Master of Public Administration, Sadie’s leadership journey was shaped not only by her academic pursuits but also by her deep involvement in student governance and sorority life.
One of Sadie’s most significant accomplishments during her time at UND was being appointed twice by North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum to represent all North Dakota University System (NDUS) students on the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education. As a Student Regent, Sadie took on the tremendous responsibility of advocating for over 45,000 students across the state. Her role demanded leadership, critical decision-making, and the ability to navigate complex higher education policies—all of which she handled with poise and dedication.
“Serving on the State Board of Higher Education as a student regent was an incredible honor and challenge,” Sadie says. “I was able to advocate for my peers at a level that few students get the opportunity to experience.”
This high-stakes role not only elevated Sadie’s leadership profile but also helped prepare her for future ambitions in public service. Her time as Student Regent was a defining moment in her college career, one that equipped her with the tools and experience necessary for her run for the North Dakota House of Representatives in the spring of 2024.
Yet, while her role on the State Board of Higher Education was a critical part of her growth, Sadie is quick to emphasize the equally important role that her sorority, Gamma Phi Beta, played in shaping her leadership journey. As a member of the Alpha Beta Chapter, she found a supportive network of women who pushed her to succeed, both academically and in her leadership endeavors. Serving as House Manager, and later as House Director, she honed her decision-making abilities, handled confidential information, and worked to create a positive living environment for her chapter sisters.
“Gamma Phi Beta helped me develop the skills I needed to be successful as a student regent,” Sadie reflects. “Whether it was leading my chapter or serving on committees, I learned how to work collaboratively, make tough decisions, and navigate the pressures of leadership.”
Sadie’s involvement in Greek life gave her a platform to lead within a close-knit community while also providing her with an alumni network that has continued to support her career aspirations. The connections she formed in Gamma Phi Beta, along with the leadership experience gained as Student Regent, have given her a unique perspective on public service and civic engagement—one that she plans to continue building on as she pursues a career in the private or public sector.
In addition to her sorority involvement and role as Student Regent, Sadie was active in several other organizations at UND, including Student Government, Student Ambassadors, College Republicans, and Women in Business. Each of these experiences added to her leadership toolbox, but it was her dual roles in student governance and Greek life that truly set her on the path toward a career in public service.
For Sadie Hanson, her time at UND was more than just about earning degrees—it was about stepping into leadership roles that would shape her future. Whether representing thousands of students as a member of the State Board of Higher Education or guiding her sorority as House Manager, Sadie’s journey proves that leadership is built through active involvement and community engagement. Her experiences in both student government and Gamma Phi Beta show the profound impact that getting involved on campus can have, equipping students with the skills, confidence, and networks necessary to make meaningful contributions to the world. Sadie’s story serves as a powerful reminder: by embracing opportunities for leadership and service, you not only shape your own future but also leave a lasting impact on your community.
