Elijah Jenkins: Leading with Resilience and Brotherhood at The University of Chicago

At just 20 years old, Elijah Jenkins is already making waves as a junior at The University of Chicago, where he serves as Student Body President. A double major pursuing a BA in Law, Letters, and Society & Race, Diaspora, and Indigeneity, along with an MA in International Relations, Elijah exemplifies the power of academic excellence paired with bold leadership. Representing his hometown of Chandler, Arizona, Elijah’s journey is marked by his deep commitment to service, cultural representation, and community empowerment—values he has honed as a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Theta Chapter.

A Campaign Built on Brotherhood

The University of Chicago’s unique approach to Greek life presented a distinctive challenge for Elijah’s campaign for Student Body President. Without formal institutional recognition of social Greek organizations, Elijah relied on the resilience and resourcefulness cultivated within the brotherhood Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. to help every step of the way. Despite the chapter’s small size of fewer than 15 members, Elijah’s brothers were deeply embedded across campus, enabling him to tap into a wide network of support.

“When I ran for Student Body President, my brothers rallied behind me in ways that showcased what true brotherhood means,” Elijah reflects. “They mobilized their networks, amplified my message, and stood by me every step of the way.”

As a sophomore running for a role typically reserved for seniors, Elijah faced unique obstacles. However, his fraternity brothers helped build critical support among upperclassmen, and their efforts during election week were instrumental in his victory. Beyond his own chapter, Elijah extended his reach by collaborating with members of other fraternities and sororities, breaking barriers and fostering a sense of unity among diverse student groups.

Leadership Shaped by Brotherhood

Elijah credits his membership in Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. with profoundly shaping his leadership journey. Serving as Parliamentarian and Historian of his chapter, he learned the importance of collaboration, trust, and empowering others.

“Leadership within Alpha Phi Alpha is not about individual power; it’s about creating opportunities for others to shine,” Elijah explains. “These lessons have shaped how I approach leadership across campus, ensuring all voices are heard and represented.”

His efforts on campus reflect this philosophy. As Co-Chair of the UChicago Black Council and the university’s representative to the Illinois Board of Higher Education, Elijah has championed initiatives that foster inclusivity and cultural representation. He successfully advocated for the hiring of UChicago’s first African Language professor to teach Igbo, enriching the academic experience for students and honoring a vital cultural heritage.

Bridging the Gap for Greek Life

Elijah’s achievements also include launching the role of Greek Life Liaisons within student government—a groundbreaking initiative that addressed the historical lack of representation for fraternities and sororities. By establishing this role, he created a bridge between Greek life and university administration, ensuring the voices of these communities are included in key decisions.

A Vision for the Future

As a first-generation, low-income student, Elijah’s journey has been defined by breaking barriers. He is the first in his family to attend college and to join a fraternity—milestones that have fueled his ambition to become a U.S. diplomat specializing in the Indo-Pacific region. Drawing from his African American and Indigenous Chamorro heritage, Elijah aspires to craft policies that promote equity, self-determination, and international collaboration.

“Joining Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. transformed my life,” Elijah shares. “It gave me a sense of brotherhood, leadership, and purpose. My goal is to use these experiences to uplift others and pave the way for those who come after me.”

Recognized for Excellence

Elijah’s dedication has not gone unnoticed. Named Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. Illinois District’s College Neophyte of the Year, he continues to set an inspiring example of resilience, resourcefulness, and servant leadership. From advocating for cultural representation to bridging divides on campus, Elijah Jenkins embodies the transformative power of fraternity life and student government.

As he looks to the future, Elijah remains committed to creating opportunities for others and using his platform to make a lasting impact—on campus, in his community, and around the world.
